Arrival & first walk through central Rome

  • 11:25 — flight departs Riga, 13:30 arrival in Rome
  • Transfer to the hotel, check-in and a short rest
  • 16:30 — guided walking tour of central Rome (3 hours)

Rome is at its best in the early evening, when the old stone facades and bridges catch a soft golden light. The walk moves through Piazza del Popolo, up to the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna, to the Trevi Fountain, then the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Piazza Venezia, ending with a view over the Roman Forum.

The Vatican

Breakfast, then a 4-hour guided tour of the Vatican — one of the most concentrated collections of art and architecture anywhere in the world. St. Peter's Square, Bernini's colonnade, the facade and interior of St. Peter's Basilica, the Via della Conciliazione, and a walk across the Sant'Angelo Bridge to Castel Sant'Angelo on the Tiber.

Free time — we recommend
  • A slow walk along the Tiber embankment
  • Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel (book ahead)

Ancient Rome: Colosseum, Forum & Capitoline Hill

Breakfast, then into the heart of ancient Rome. The Colosseum — built between 72–80 AD, capable of holding up to 65,000 spectators — followed by Capitoline Hill, one of the seven hills the city was founded on.

In the afternoon: Circus Maximus, the Aventine Hill and its famous keyhole view of three countries at once, the Orange Garden with its view over the city, and the Mouth of Truth. The day ends in Trastevere, one of Rome's most atmospheric neighborhoods, with time for dinner in its narrow streets.

The coast at Lido di Ostia

Afternoon in Rome — we recommend

  • Shopping along Rome's fashion streets
  • Revisiting a favorite square at a slower pace
